Human Beings – Thriving

Let us take a quick walk down memory lane, recalling Will’s remarkable journey of transformation to arrive at this stage of seeing past his limitations and disability.

At the film’s outset, Will is imprisoned by his physical disability, mental blocks, and emotional wounds. He is exploited by a heartless carnival owner who made money off Will’s suffering. This derogatory treatment, coupled with entrenched social stigma, intensifies Will’s belief that he is an object of pity and that his future is devoid of hope. These experiences embitter him, fostering distrust and causing him to build emotional walls that shield him from further pain. However, his protective mechanism also isolates him from building meaningful connections with others.

Everything changes when Will encounters the Butterfly Circus. For the first time, he experiences something he has never experienced: genuine acceptance, welcome, and love. This circus is not about exploitation or making profits. Rather, it is about second chances in life, upholding human dignity, celebrating diversity, and promoting communal support. Will is challenged to see himself beyond his limitations. He is challenged to see himself as he truly is – a beautiful human being.

With the support and encouragement of his newfound family, Will begins to heal. Their genuine acceptance and unwavering belief in him gradually break through his defenses, allowing him to let go of bitterness and embrace a hopeful outlook for the future. This nurturing environment not only helps change Will’s perspective on life but also empowers him to uncover his strength.

The pivotal moment in Will’s transformation journey comes when he takes a leap, dives into a tank of water, and emerges with triumphal joy. This act of courage is both literal and symbolic. Will’s performance astounds the audience and earns him thundering cheers and applause. Yet the journey that leads to this moment is long and hard. Will triumphs over his physical limitations and self-consciousness, breaking free from the self-imposed prison of fear and doubts. He takes the leap of faith, plunges into the unknown, and emerges liberated. Will is free from his past and free to live a new life.

“The Butterfly Circus” film closes with a poignant scene in which all the circus members look with wonder, happiness, and joyful tears as Sam lets the butterfly he has raised from a caterpillar fly away. The butterfly, a symbol of transformation and freedom, embodies each character’s journey. It signifies the strength and courage to let go of past constraints, social stigmas, self-doubt, and fear, ultimately embracing one’s dignity and full potential for a hope-filled future.

From the ending, we can envision the Butterfly Circus continuing its journey, spreading joy, inspiring others, and bringing hope to those it touches. The film also invites us to reflect on how kindness, acceptance, and the power of community can create profound changes in individuals and communities, impacting the world for a better future.

The film is thought-provoking because it challenges our deeply ingrained perceptions of beauty, value, and personal worth. The film’s themes of transformation, community, resilience, and hope invite us to challenge social norms, recognize the power of community, and celebrate the beauty of individual differences. The story intertwines personal growth with “collective impact.”

The collective impact approach involves organizations, communities, or other groups joining together to face and address complex social problems. This is accomplished by different groups agreeing on a goal, tracking progress in compatible ways, and assigning different tasks/roles to each other (according to who can do what best). [i]

The Butterfly Circus in the film is a microcosm of this concept. All the members of the circus are different from each other. They are all different sizes and ages and have different strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. They do not, at first glance, appear to go together. However, each member is assigned a role he or she can perform well – something they were “made for.” Then, they all work together toward a common goal to create a show that can delight and inspire an audience. And, in doing so, they also create a home, a safe place for potential to develop and, eventually, spread its wings.

In today’s world, we are spoiled, perhaps even overwhelmed, by numerous choices of entertainment. Most of us watch a movie or a TV show and then quickly move on to the next without pausing to think about what we just watched. How often do we take a moment to reflect on what we consume or even engage in meaningful discussions about it? How many of us feel that entertainment is a personal choice, so there is no need to consider whether our entertainment is wholesome?

I hope this is not the case with “The Butterfly Circus.”

In the next blog, I will share some thought-provoking questions for readers to reflect on individually or discuss with others. Together, we will explore several key areas in greater depth. Stay tuned for the journey ahead!
